Back in 1792 Otto Von Guericke created the first air pump, and it resembled what we know today as a piston compressor.
A piston compressor or reciprocating compressor is one of the most common types of compressors when starting a business.
What is a piston compressor?
A reciprocating compressor uses positive displacement to operate. This means that they use a series of valves and a piston to create compressed air.
How does a reciprocating compressor work?
A reciprocating compressor uses an intake valve, piston, and exit valve. As the piston goes down the cylinder air is drawn in through the intake valve, and the exit valve is closed. Once the piston starts to go up the cylinder the exit valve opens, the intake valve closes, and the air is forced to exit through the exit valve. See cross-sectional illustration.

Why reciprocating air compressors?
A reciprocating compressor is beneficial for someone looking for a low-cost, esay to move, maintain, and control. If you are interested in a piston unit visit our products page for Piston Air Compressors.
